Saturday:

Shorter technical ride on Saturday morning for 1hr or so to check out abilities of riders etc…

Then we will probably split into 2 groups for a longer ride just after an early lunch and do a 4hr ride.

Sunday:

Aim for a longer 5-6hrs on Sunday taking in the longest route around Afan.

Dave knows all the route names / details. The goal is to simulate the Cape Epic distance and the ride will naturally be techically above what is expected at Cape Epic. We will focus on improving everyone’s endurance and strength and nutrition skills.

We will aim to have the Cape Epic sponsored nutrition of Mule Bar Kicks gels and the bars for people to try and buy so that they get used to it for the race!

The evenings will be used to chat about the race, show you coverage and answer questions. Key points like hydration will be covered off.

Saturday:

This will follow the same format as the prior weekend and is important as Epic is about stringing 8 days of tough riding together. Through the week between the weekends Special endurance training will have been laid on at Pedal Studio and so this will pick up off this and prepare you for the final two days of Epic. This is when you will need to dig deep, a loss of concentration on these last two days which are traditionlly more techincal can cost you.

Sunday:

Final day of hard endurance. This should be your last hard training ride as you taper and prepare for the race. Race starts 25th March so you have 3 weeks to keep busy but to also rest up the legs.

Bikes – I currently ride 29er’s mountain bikes and have really enjoyed the ride of the Fisher Superfly. To me, this bike defies all the negatives a 29er is known for. My trail bashing bike is a Singular Swift and I have a London single speed to get me around town.

Trails – The South of England and Wales are my ‘local’ playgrounds. I have spent a lot of time in and around Afan, Brechfa, Brecon Beacons, South Downs, North Downs and recently have headed further North for the delights of The Lake District. I don’t mind where I ride really as long as I can get long days in the saddle with a few surprises along the way.

Races – Two multi-day races in 2010 stood out for me. First the Trans Portugal really demonstrated what a well organised event can deliver – from trails to post-race catering to accommodation, these guys had it sorted. My second event was the Trans Provence and whilst it is quite new on the stage race calendar I am confident that once the word is out it will be impossible to get an entry. This ‘all mountain’ feast of singletrack is literally unbelievable.

Likes – Bikes, coffee and living the dream. I currently live in London but I am fortunate enough to spend a lot of time travelling both abroad and in the UK and have ridden some amazing trails.
